The Storm of the Century?
Hurricane Sandy could be called The Storm of the Century.
Don’t you think?
The storm itself was over 1000 miles wide.
Shoreline, sand dunes, piers, docks, ships and boats — devastated by the wind and surge.
Houses, shops, famous landmarks —– entire neighborhoods —– wiped out.
1000s of trees uprooted or damaged and yet to be hauled off as debris.
As you get into the cities, especially New York City and Manhattan … they are just now assessing the damage to the subways and trains.
The tunnels are flooded.
The basements are flooded.
Even LaGuardia Airport is mostly underwater.
The death toll, fortunately, was not as bad as it could have been.
People like Gov. Christie of New Jersey told his people to “get the hell out.”
Life, as many people knew it, will never be the same.
It might be significant if The Storm of the Century only affected 1 state or 1 city.
This hurricane has impacted small towns, cities, states, Wall Street, and the airline industry.
17,000 flights canceled as of this writing.
The Storm of the Century, well, she could be called that, proceeded to damage the Eastern Seaboard and then went inland with it’s effects being felt and seen in the Great Lakes and on into Canada.
Amazing.
Not only did we have a hurricane come from the south and east, but we had the big cold front coming from the north and west.
The two collided and we’ve had large amounts of snow falling from Tennessee and North Carolina and all over the Ohio River basin.
My pastor’s folks live in West Virginia and they have had a lot of snow. Plus it’s the heavy, wet snow that can cause so much damage to trees and buildings.
Was Sandy The Storm of the Century?
It will certainly go down as one of the most expensive and destructive hurricanes of all time.
The financial estimates will be changing from day to day and the insurance adjustors do their jobs.
But let’s not forget about Katrina and what it did to New Orleans and southern Mississippi and the whole Gulf Coast.
But, then have we forgotten about the Tsunami of 2004.
It was Sunday, December 26.
And it was caused by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
The final death toll was 283,000.
So, was Sandy The Storm of the Century?
Let’s wait and see.
There may be more storms, earthquakes, eruptions, tornadoes, drought, floods…
what some people call Acts of God.
I called them Mother Nature Gone Wild.
Let’s reserve the title of The Storm of the Century to be bestowed by a future generation!
