Scary Movies
I don't like Halloween. You see, Halloween is a tradition that promotes fear, even if you get candy.
Isn't
it crazy how all the traditional religious holidays that had a special
meaning, like Easter, Christmas and All Soul's Day, have been perverted
by greeting card companies, candy manufacturers, department stores and
even Hollywood!
There are always Scary Movies that come out this time of year.
The writers, directors and producers of Hollywood love to scare us and they know we love to be scared.
You see, I've always been intrigued with Scary Movies, but not the gory, violent ones.
My
son got me to watch Saw with him. You see, that's what I'm talking
about. I don't want to see a lot of blood and see people suffer.
But, I started watching the classic
Scary Movies on Saturday afternoon reruns when I was a kid. And yes, they were in black & white.
They would play
Frankenstein (1931) with Boris Karloff. Or
The Mummy (1932), that he also starred in.
I loved
The Thing From Another World (1951) which starred James Arness as the monster. He was really just a big, giant shoot of broccoli!
My parents took me to see the original
The Fly (1958) when I was very small. I hid under my seat!
So, I like the classics.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) starring Michael Rennie. Wow! Scary + aliens + super robots!
I could go on an on about Scary Movies.
One more!
Because I don't like to be really scared I have never seen all of
The Exorcist, or
Amityville Horror, or
Nightmare on Elmstreet.
I like to sleep at night and don't want to worry about every noise and bump in the night that I hear!
But, one of the greatest scary movies was
Jaws (1975).
You say, Chuck, come on! It was a movie about a killer shark.
Exactly!
It
came out in 1975 and I remember being on tour with our group,
Theophilus. We were traveling for Gulf Coast Bible College and were
touring the East Coast.
My friend, Paul, and I, and maybe others ended up going to see the movie. I think we were in Kentucky at the time.
Do you know what makes most movies scary? The music!
Music is so dramatic and can add suspense to a scene.
Composer John Williams knows this like no other!
Whenever
the shark was getting ready to strike what did you hear? The low cellos
and basses in the orchestra playing the famous 2 notes. Slowly at
first, then building in tempo and volume!
So, the best scene in
the movie, to me, is when they are checking out a submerged boat and a
severed head comes into view. Richard Dreyfuss or Roy Scheider is under
the water in scuba gear and mask. When the head appeared and they
jumped - so did I! I was scared!
Some of us were swimming after a
concert one night. We were in a small above ground pool that was about
3 feet deep. Guess what?
Yep! I was swimming underwater with my eyes open and I started getting scared. Why?
Because
it was night, the lights and shadows were bouncing around the pool,
I
was in water swimming ... a lot of what I saw in Jaws except it was in a
pool and not the ocean.
But guess what? I was spooked! Thank you Steven Spielberg and John Williams.
What's the point?
Scary Movies
They do exactly what they are supposed to do ... scare you!
What are you afraid of?
- The future?
- Politics?
- Terrorists?
- The economy?
