Winning With Your Team

Moore, OK
This morning I had to privilege of leading our worship team in our morning worship service. That was 7 musicians and 2 media guys + me. These wonderful volunteers then led the congregation of 300 or so in a great time of worship. I was blessed and I believe God was pleased.
What defines a great team?  I was reflecting on our time together and these are some of my thoughts.
  • A great team has a common vision. In our case our vision is to produce good quality live music to enhance our worship services.
  • A great team uses their individual skills & talent in a united effort. We have some excellent musicians and vocalists.  These men & women practice the songs on their own and then come together weekly to present them in the worship time.
  • A great team encourages each other. Hey, we're not always "up," especially at 7:45 on Sunday morning.  We don't always have a good day before our Thursday night practice. But great team members will try to lift the ones who are down and in our case pray for each other.
  • A great team needs each member doing their job at the expected level for the common good.  Everyone has a position to play and every position is important.  Our team consists of drums, bass guitar, 2 electric guitars, acoustic guitar, keyboard & piano, and vocals.  Each part of that band is important.  We've had to practice without a particular instrument or vocal part and it's not easy.  It's so much better when everyone shows up ready to go, knowing their parts and we put it all together and make great musical sounds.
  • A great team needs to listen to the leader and be ready to adapt. Sometimes the plan you have looks good on paper or sounds good in your head, but it's only when the parts are all together that you realize something might be better if you made an adjustment.  Be flexible.  Stand for what you believe, but be flexible to try something in a new way.  In our worship team example I don't really know what I want in a particular part of a song unless we try it.  Maybe I'll ask the drums to lay out for a few measures.  Or perhaps we'll sing the chorus of a song with just our voices and no instruments backing us up.  The team has to follow the leader and be willing to change at a moments notice.
  • A great team is not just one person.  The Lone Ranger was a misnomer.  He was never alone.  He always had his trusty sidekick, Tonto, and many times Tonto got the masked man out of some jams.  Don't forget about Lucy & Ricky, Lennon & McCartney, Hall & Oates, Rogers & Hammerstein, Batman & Robin, Abbott & Costello.  The Bible says "Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed."  Ecclesiastes 4:9 New Living Translation
