Fear Of Flying

Fear of Flying

The other night I dreamed I was flying.  It was kind of like I was flying on my own or I was in a mini-helicopter, I’m not real sure. But, I remember trying to avoid the power lines and going up and down.  It was a strange, but wonderful sensation.

It was a great feeling to be in the air.  There was a certain amount of freedom I felt, but also trepidation, because I could tell I didn’t know what I was doing.

I didn’t know how high I could fly without getting into the path of the regular aircraft.  I also wasn’t sure of what speed I should go, so I think I kind of went slow.

Now, it was nothing like the super hero in the Will Smith movie, Hancock.  He could go fast and was really good at flying.  I could tell I was just a novice that had been given a chance to fly.

Isn’t that the way it is in life?  You want to fly, you want to soar, you want to be free of restrictions and the things that are holding you down.

And if you are trying to fly and try your wings you might be like I was in my dream, a little anxious, a little in fear, and maybe a little helpless because you don’t have it all figured out and you don’t have enough experience.

Fear of Flying is real, but so what?

Ok. Let’s say that you have decided it’s time to fly – in your relationships, in your spirituality, in your job or business, or in your health. You have taken the first step to “flying” by deciding you’re not staying where you are.  By God’s grace you are determined to make a change, get serious, buckle down, pay the price, or what other metaphor you want to list.  You’re not going to be held back any longer.

Congratulations.

Whether you know it or not, you are now flying, even though the forces of gravity are strong, like the fear of failure [what will people think], and some even have the fear of success [I’m not sure if I can do this and what if it really works].

The people below on the ground [the status quo] are usually in two camps:

  • Some of them will cheer you on and really hoping you’ll do good because secretly they wish they had the nerve you had to at least try.
  • The haters and naysayers who say “who do they think they are trying to run their own business?” or “you’ll never make it, you never have in the past” or even people that spread gossip and lies about you.

Look, “grasshopper” [from the TV show Kung Fu], it’s time you start flying and soaring.  You were made for this moment!

Don’t let the Fear of Flying keep you grounded any longer.

What do you do next?

Take ACTIONMassive Action.  As Dave Ramsey says have Gazelle Intensity.

Start the diet.  Start walking and exercising.  Turn off the TV [how many reruns of ________ do you need to watch?].  Take a course.  Ask her out on a date.  Meet with your accountant. Place an ad.  Learn a new instrument.

Whatever it is, Just Do It [as Nike says].

Don’t be earthbound any more.

Abandon the Fear of Flying and just FLY!
