Fundamentals

The Basics are the building blocks of whatever endeavor you may be part of.
In other words, if you take a system and break it down to the basics, the bottom line will be the Fundamentals.
Sports Fundamentals
My son-in-law is a coach. When he works with the squads each year, no matter how much experience a player may have, he works on the Fundamentals.
What are the fundamentals of football? Blocking, tackling, throwing, catching and running. If a player can do these at the right time and in the right way they will be a great asset to the team and the team will have a chance to see great success.
My Experience with Basketball Fundamentals
When I was in the 7th grade I decided I would play basketball. I had no idea what I was doing. Each day I would show up for practice and the only thing I can remember is doing drills. We would dribble the ball, throw the ball to each other in a "star" pattern, run up and down the court and practice free throws.I was so out of place but I stuck with it. Here was a chubby little boy in P.E. shorts and running shoes [back then they had a weird narrow sole] in south Texas learning to play basketball. I didn't even know the rules. So, one day we had to go play a real game. Apparently the days or weeks of practice culminated in our getting on the bus and heading out of town to play our first game.I remember getting dressed in the locker room. The coach or manager handed out the jerseys. Oh, my! These were like tiny little tank top t-shirts. I had to put one on and go out on the court in front of a crowd and a bunch of young teenage girls. I was scared to death! We went on the court and got to warm up a little bit. Then they put the 5 starters on the floor and I got to sit on the bench. That was a safe place because there were people (girls) in the stand right above and behind me.The game progressed. At some point the coach said, "Whetstone. Go in!" They told me to go down to the scorer's table to check in. I had never seen that done or even heard of it before that moment. It was on-the-job training! The clock started and I was playing basketball, in public, in my very first game! It was thrilling. Are you kidding? I was scared.I immediately got "cotton mouth." Have you ever had that? It is an extreme dryness. I could hardly breath and could barely swallow. That was like the first 10 seconds on the court. The next thing I know someone gives me the ball. What were the Fundamentals that we worked on? Dribbling, shooting, passing.Guess what? I've got the ball and the only thing I know to do is take a shot at the basket!
Well, I missed the shot, but I was fouled. The ref blew the whistle. He told the other guy to raise his hand since he had fouled me. What did I do? I raised my hand, too.The ref had me go to the free throw line. He said "Two shots." I thought that to be strange since the other guy only hit me once!Nevertheless, I took my first free-throw and missed. The ref gave me the ball for a second time. It could have been a scene from the movie "Hoosiers." NOT!I took my second shot and it went in the basket! Everyone clapped (well on my team) and I heard the buzzer go off. The coach immediately put in the starter who's place I had taken. I was relieved and happy at the same time! That was the end of my basketball career. One game. One point. I quit after that game. It wasn't my sport! But the Fundamentals I had worked on paid off and I was able to contribute to my team's effort.

Now see those fundamentals would have helped me in basketball the one time I was told I had to play at camp and I had no idea what I was doing. I was so mad because I kept fouling and didn't even know the rules!!!!
