Weird Songs

Weird Songs

Most everyone loves music.  I have heard it said that there are 3 universal languages
  1. Music
  2. Love
  3. Money

And most every song that has ever been written or sung or played has a title.  I know of songs that even carry the name "Untitled."

Today's blog is remembering songs that we love, or songs that we love to hate, or songs that we wish we'd never hear again.

And some of them are just Weird Songs!

This blog might also bring to light some obscure song titles that you never knew or that you have forgotten about.

When I was a kid there were some great songs on the radio, but they had strange or funny titles. This first one I remember my sister and Mom singing to me when I was 3-5 years old!

3 Little Fishies
Sung by Kay Kyser (#1 in 1939)  Words and music by Saxie Dowell
Down in the meadow in a little bitty pool
Swam three little fishies and a mama fishie too
"Swim" said the mama fishie, "Swim if you can"
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

"Mairzy Doats" is a novelty song composed in 1943 by Milton Drake, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston
I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake
Goofy as a goon and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty,
others call it crazy
But they all sing this tune:

Mairzy doats and dozy doats
And liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats
and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

The Purple People Eater
Recorded by: Sheb Wooley   Written by: (Sheb Wooley)
Single: Released - June, 1958
Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple eater to me

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
(One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me (One eye?)

"Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" is a novelty song telling the story of a shy girl wearing a revealing polka dot bikini at the beach. It was written by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss and first released in June 1960 by Brian Hyland with orchestra conducted by John Dixon.
She was afraid to come out of the locker
She was as nervous as she could be
She was afraid to come out of the locker
She was afraid that somebody would see
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore

It was an itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today
An itsy, bitsy, teentie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini
So in the locker she wanted to stay
Two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more

  1. "Mairzy Doats" was one of my favorites as a kid. How about "I'm my own Grandpa"? ;)

  2. Can't forget "On Top Of Spaghetti"! Not sure who wrote it but I actually thought my dad made up that song! He used to sing it every time we had spaghetti when I was growing up! I guess he didn't make it up since I did find a youtube video of the song! Haha! Love it!
