Can you remember your New Year's Resolutions from last year?

I can.  I was going to lose weight and start working out at a gym.
Well, I did.  I joined a gym.

My new resolution?  To actually go to the gym! LOL.
But seriously.

Resolutions are like the toasts given at a

you really mean them, but do they really have any lasting effect?

No.
Some famous resolutions of the past might be:

• I resolve to spend more time with my family

Most resolutions are hollow words.  Nothing comes of them.

But what if you start a REVOLUTION?
The Beatles sang about it.

You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead

That's the KEY for a revolution!  Change your Stinkin' Thinkin'.

I love Digiital Goddess Kim Komando.  Her radio shows are awesome.
She posted on Facebook today.  I had no idea what I was paying!

Her website tells us:

One of the biggest costs associated with computer use is printing. Ink isn't cheap, and it always seems like you need more!
In fact, an economic columnist this year pegged the cost-per-gallon price of printer ink at $4,731. Talk about black gold!
When you print from the Internet especially, you print ads, graphics and other junk you don't really need. Fortunately, there are plenty of great ways to save money on ink and paper.

But can you imagine paying over $4700 for ink?

I know when I go to the local Walmart to get some ink [which I need
right now] I pay over $26 just for the black.



The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the average price of a
gallon of milk this November was $3.53.

Consider the cost of 2 liter soda. Because of fuel prices the last couple of
years the cost of my Dr. Pepper went up from an average of $1.09 to at least
$1.39.

I found some great things on the 103.7 lite fm station web site: [dated March 7, 2012]

In the sodas category, one gallon of Dr Pepper, or 3.79L, costs $7.01. A gallon of Coca-Cola will cost you $6.78.

College students looking to pull an all-nighter by guzzling a gallon of Red Bull will have to scrounge up a whopping $31.84.

How about your favorite coffee?

Starbucks junkies that shell out $3.45 for a 12 oz tall fancy coffee drink would have to pay $36.92 for a gallon of that favorite drink.

Feeling under the weather? Robitussin normally costs $6.50 for 8oz, but for $103.68 per gallon you could battle a lifetime of sniffles.

Printer Toner:  That costs $800 per gallon.

Struggle Your Way to Success

I don't know about you but I don't like to reflect on the
negative or bad things in my past.

I try to live my life with optimism and zest believing that
the best is yet to be and tomorrow is another day.

So, I have purposely avoided thinking about hard times...

...or in other words...


...Struggles.

Our NC House [remodeled after we moved]

Being winter here in Oklahoma has made me think back to some "less pleasant" times I had in North Carolina.

I had forgotten - well, blocked it out of my mind - how cold it used to be in our 900 square foot house.

 We had a small wood stove but it wasn't enough heat for the whole house.

 We had to supplement it with a portable kerosene heater.

 Don't you just love the smell of kerosene in a 5 gallon can?

 Well, that leads me to remembering I had to go to the gas
station and purchase the kerosene and probably spill some
on your shoes or hands.

 Then you lug it out of the trunk of your car [yes, no truck
back then] and carry a heavy 5 gallon container of stinky
kerosene to your back porch.

 Then you get on your hands and knees and get a handheld
siphon pump to move the kerosene from the can into the
little stove.

 Again, more possible spills.

 So, that portable heater was one we put in the kitchen
or carried into our really cold bathroom.  That way we
kept the house moderately warm.

Let me mention just a few more memories that have popped into my
brain when I've had to face the idea of a cold winter in a cold house.

Struggle Your Way to Success

Our old house was ... old!  In fact it was originally
part of a larger plot of land where the owner had
built a mother-in-law type house within ear shot
of our house.

 The problem was this little M-I-L house had to share
our water and our pump!  So, when the electricity
went off or I had to fix part of the well our neighbor,
Mary, had no water!

And, our pump was not a submersible pump!  It was
an exterior pump located in part of our enclosed back
porch where we kept our washer and dryer.  Can you
say "No insulation?"

So, guess what?  We had to have ANOTHER portable
kerosene heater in our laundry room so the pump and
the plumbing would not freeze during the winter.

And you know when you are most likely to run out of
kerosene? At night..when it's cold...when you are ready for bed.

Oh, and I had to also have a stead supply of dry wood
to place inside the woodstove because one kerosene
heater in the house was not enough to heat the whole thing!

So, a lot of my spare time was devoted to wood and
kerosene.  No wonder I have forced this memory to the
back recesses of my mind!

Struggle Your Way to Success

Well, time has passed. We have lived in Oklahoma and Louisiana since then
and have enjoyed having nicer paying jobs and nicer living conditions!
I no longer struggle with kerosene heaters or woodstoves!

At the time this was all I knew to do and all that I could afford:
Fill up the heater with kerosene!

Perhaps you are struggling with a situation.  It might be finances, or
relationships, or occupation, or even spirituality. Don't give up!  Don't quit.

There is a better day coming.

You can struggle your way to success! So, don't quit!

You also want to attract attention and get traffic to your blog.

What do you do next?

You need to add images to your content.

Free Stock Images

Images?

Yes, images.  Pics, photos, glossies, 8X10 and 5X7.

The old saying goes like this:

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Your words are powerful. Your blog is important to you.

Imagine joining the power of words with the power of an image.

But, you do a Google search on images and you find thousands
of great pics.

The trouble is the majority of the great pics that you like
are copyrighted.

Someone else created them and they own the rights to them.

Of course, if you have plenty of money you can purchase the
rights to some of these great images by paying the royalty fee.

And, there are many sites that offer royalty free images for you
to use, but you'll have to sign up for their web site, login, search,
and hope to find the image you want.

And what if you find an image you really love but it has a
watermark on it showing who owns it or the web site that
you downloaded it from.

Here's an idea.  Make your own!

Technology has made some great strides in recent years.

You can get a great digital camera made by Canon or Olympus
with 8, 10, 12 or 15 megapixels.

And the prices of all digital cameras are going down while the
quality increases.

Or if you have a smartphone you have a great built in digital camera.

OK. You've got a camera or a phone.  What next?

Keep it Simple.

You can get fancy flash cameras and tripods and great backdrops
to stage your shots.

But, remember the old saying:

Keep it simple, sunshine!

You can stage your shots anywhere.  Let me give you some examples
of what I have done for my own blog.

The coffee cup at the top of this blog is a pic I took in my
kitchen on the counter.

I needed the image of a cup for a blog I wrote about
spilling hot coffee on myself.  Read it here.

Here's a shot of a battery I needed.

Whatever you need an image of you can do it yourself.

Here are some ideas for you to use.
Objects:

• balls
• light bulb
• cash money
• blank check
• suitcase
• furniture
• computer

Nature

Oklahoma Sunset

• trees
• sunsets
• sunrise
• birds
• animals
• grass

So, really the sky is the limit!

If you go to the beach take pictures.

If you go on vacation, see a great
sunset, go to a ball game, see a new construction site...take a picture.

You take the shot, you own the image.

After you create your image you
can upload it to your blog and
save it there, or use a web source to store your pics.

Photobucket is a great solution and is free.

So, start taking more pictures.  There's not a better time
or a better way to enhance your blogs.

John Lavenia was sharing tonight on our Extreme Team hangout.

"sick" to have to go there as a youngster.

Don't get me wrong.  They were great people.
I just didn't like where they lived and how they lived.

My parents changed that for me and my sister. I want to change that and have
changed that for my kids.

But I want to do more.  Not that I'm greedy, but I want to be able to
help others.

Lastly, John said,

Decide who you are and be that!

Joseph in the Bible had a dream.  Actually a few.
It got him in a lot of trouble with his family and others.

Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream. He spoke about it and
marched for it.

I had a dream.  An actual dream. Well... let me back up.

My grandfather had several guitars that he hung on his wall in his home.
He also played the harmonica, and maybe other instruments.

One day when I was a young teen he gave me a cornet, an accordian,
and a guitar.

 Blogging To Change Lives

Well, being a teenager what did I do with the stuff?

Blow on the cornet
a few times and put everything in the closet.

He even gave me a Mel Bay guitar instruction book [Level 1]

Well some time later, maybe a year or two, I was sleeping and minding my own business and I started dreaming. Here's my dream:

I dreamed I saw a friend of mine named Doris. I asked her
"Doris, will you tune my guitar for me?"

That was it.  I don't remember anything else about the dream.

But guess what happened?

I woke up the next day and I was sick.  So I stayed home from school. :)

Here's the amazing thing.  I remembered the dream.

I remembered the dream and decided to go get my old Sears & Roebuck Spanish guitar
and dust it off. Hey, I was sick.  What else was I to do?  Watch a black & white TV with 3 channels? [it was the 60's]

I also found the Mel Bay guitar book, opened it up and it showed me exactly how
to tune my guitar to my piano.

You see, I had played the piano since I was about 7 or so.  I had been playing about
7 years at this point.

So, I did what the book told me to do and I tuned my guitar!  Amazing!

And, I started teaching myself how to play the guitar.

A Dream is Nothing if You Don't Take Action

You can have the loftiest and grandest dreams.

They can be admirable and highly esteemed.

They can even be sincere, well meaning and beneficial to yourself and others.

But...

If you don't take ACTION, your dream will NOT become a reality.

What else can I say?

A dream is worth nothing until you take ACTION.

So...

Let's get serious.

What is YOUR dream?  While you are thinking, let me tell you mine.

• I have a dream that my wife can retire and stay home and enjoy life and
  our grandkids.
• I have a dream of being out of debt, including the house mortgage.
• I have a dream of retiring with dignity and not counting on
  Social Insecurity.
• I have a dream of blessing my kids and grandkids.
• I have a dream to bless my church.
• I have a dream to bless others.

We love The Andy Griffith Show at our house.

One episode I remember watching as a child [or adult] had comedian Don Rickles
guest starring.  It was called The Luck of Newton Munroe
[Season 5, Episode 29 (12 Apr. 1965)]

Newton Monroe [Don Rickles] is a traveling salesman who sells whatever he can get a good deal on out of the trunk of his car. Andy is concerned at first that he's selling stolen goods but he's legitimate, if somewhat unlucky. Soon everything he's been selling starts to break down: Goober's [George Lindsey] transistor radio, Floyd's [Howard McNear] watch and the fox fur Barney [Don Knotts] bought for Thelma Lou is losing its fur in large clumps. Barney runs him in for peddling his wares without a permit and decides to keep him working around the courthouse. Problem is, almost everything he touches turns into a minor disaster. Andy decides that Newton needs a bit of confidence building and gives him the task of painting his house. The result are in keeping with Newton's past experiences.

Is it Okay to Regift your Christmas Gifts?

I've done it. 

Certain family members of mine have done and still do it.

Have you done it?

What am I talking about?

Regifting.

What is regifting?

I did a Google search and was amazed at some of the 369,000 results!

The Wisegeek says

Regifting is the process of passing a gift one receives onto another person. It may be that the gift makes it suitable for regifting because the color, or style of the gift would be ideal for someone else. Alternately, many people regift items like wine or food if they have dietary restrictions. Gift certificates to stores one doesn’t frequent might also make great opportunities for regifting, when one knows someone else will appreciate the gift certificate.

He goes on to say

Further, one should always keep track of gifts one has received, and use thank you notes appropriately. It is extremely bad form to regift something back to the person who originally gave you the gift, or regifting to someone who might also regift. There are stories about presents being passed around until they come back to the original purchasers. Generally, the person who originally bought the gift can be quite hurt to receive it back.
Usually, one chooses to regift because the gift is something one does not need or care for. Such a gift should always be met with the appropriate thanks. Regifting the item should be performed with a little finesse so as not to offend the person who gave you the present.

I was watching the Today Show the other day and it made me MAD!

They were talking finances, etc.

The nice lady said if you are getting close to retirement
[whatever age that may be] you might try to "practice" living
on the amount you'll bring home when you retire.

The premise was this:

You are going to have a dramatic drop in income, so start living on that measly amount now to get used to it!

It made me MAD.

I plan on making MORE in my retirement years with Empower Network
than I've made in the last 40 combined. I'm not going to let Social Insecurity
dictate my lifestyle, or let my 401K limit me on how I live.

I'm sick of Poverty Preaching. I'm fed up with Debt Dementia.

Money Magazine's Donna Rosato.

 >>> planning for retirement. the day you'll walk away from your job is ten years or less away, it is time to get serious. "money" magazine donna rosato has good ideas. good morning.

>> good morning, willie.

>> first tip surprised me frankly. you said you'll need seven times your salary to retire, if you make $50,000 a year you should have 350 grand socked away.

 >> seems like a big chunk of money. that doesn't include social security which is 20% more of what you're earning. there are things you can do, ten years out you still have time. plan to work longer. that will make a big difference. if you can cut back on your spending now, you could probably save more, or people just learn to live on less, plan to live on less when they retire.

>> and you say still for ten years out, it's never too soon to schmooze a little bit. you can keep doing it, ten years out from here?

>> that's right. nothing that can derail your retirement savings and plans than getting laid off so keep dazzling your boss still. retain good relationships with your co-workers, but just as important is making connections and good relations with people younger than you. some of that next generation might have a say in whether you say or go later on.

>> five years out now. the kids have moved out of the house. time to downside.

>> that's right. housing for most people is the big expense. if the kids are grown and hopefully gone, then do you really need a bigger house? do you need it in a good school district? a study by brookings institute said a home in a school district that is highly rated costs 2.4 times more than one in a lower rated distrifnlt lower your housing costs you can savemore for retirement is there what about working part-time after you retire. when do you start thinking about that?

>> answer the for a lot of people to work longer, at least in some capacity. want to do it five years out, fresh skills, up-to-date skills and fresh contacts. easier to lay the groundwork five years out than once you retire.

>> move one year out from retirement you say it's really time to start getting conservative with your investments.

>> lower your risk levels. we know from 2008, if you were retiring then, the market would have had a huge retirement. get more conservative. the rule of thumb is 40% to 50% in stock.

>> what about living on less income? tips for people, what's the bottom line?

>> before you actually retire, try to practice living on less, see what that's like. can you live on the income that you expect to have with your savings, and if not think about those options again, maybe you work a little bit longer and make sure you get that part-time job, always things you can do to improve things.
